There is no doubt that Breathwork is certainly trending. It has become a modality that hits many of the markers that are attractive to humans. Lets do a bit of a deep dive into those markers and why they are important to give some attention to.
First of all, our breath is literally our lifeline to continue to exist in this world in each and every moment. No breath, no life. Even though it is embedded in the autonomic system of our make-up, meaning we can't just shut it down without some sort of intervention. We will always breath as long as all systems are on-line within us. So even though we can't just turn off our breath, we can play with it and tune into it in different ways to truly utilize the depth of how it can support us into a Thriving state.
Holotropic breathing is the style of breathing that is most often utilized in a breathwork practice or ceremony. It is a method of self-exploration and therapy that involves rapid and deep breathing to induce altered states of consciousness. The term "holotropic" means "moving toward wholeness" in Greek, reflecting the idea that this breathing technique can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and promote healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.
Here are just some of the incredible benefits of these breathing techniques that can be considered when identifying if breathwork is right for you:
Reduces stress and anxiety
Improves mental clarity and focus
Enhances emotional well-being
Boosts immune system
Increases energy levels
Promotes relaxation and better sleep
Helps in managing pain
So, why not? If these are the benefits why doesn't everyone already do this? Well, as with most things that benefit us, they also challenge the current parameters of our comfort zone.
Some of these breathing techniques when first initiated can feel uncomfortable. They involve some breathing cadences that are far outside the depth of what we are used to, they also include some prolonged breath holds which also breaches our comfort. Of course it does, its breaching our survival mechanism that tells us to breath to continue living. Now all that said, these practices have been utilized for thousands of years and are safe. Its the mere activation of pushing these thresholds that activate the reset of our nervous system. What is more grounding than pushing your self outside of your comfort zone and realizing that you are safe and revitalized on the other side of the experience. That is the basic definition of expansion and transformation.
There are many ways to dip your toes into this realm, as well as many ways to deep dive depending on what you are calling in for yourself. What I suggest is review some of the literature and content that is out there. I have added some links below to some of the options for the different modalities of breathwork. I for one am attracted to the 9D Breathwork experiences, as they have supported me in moments where I was calling shifts in stuck energy. The 9D platform also has some short experiences that are fitting for a start of day practice to get the system on-line.
Enjoy the Exploration
